I think people spent a lot of time getting distracted simply because there was so much time. If you know you have a while before a deadline people are going to mess around at first.
Honestly, their brains are so messed up that it could be that they do know but they can't remember it right. It's hard to tell as long as they're confused.
I spoke to them a little, but I didn't get the impression that they were upset about being confused, you know? If you couldn't remember, then wouldn't it bother you?
