I think people spent a lot of time getting distracted simply because there was so much time. If you know you have a while before a deadline people are going to mess around at first.

Honestly, their brains are so messed up that it could be that they do know but they can't remember it right. It's hard to tell as long as they're confused.

(THERE'S A WHOLE FOREST IN THIS SPACE SHIP) the place is massive, there are orchards, waterfalls, even a lake and a river. there are buildings in the distance, and when you look up you can see the clear sky. you feel a little grubby in all this splendor, there's dirt on your face and your clothes are threadbare in all the wrong places, but... the longer you look around, the quicker your sense of novelty wears off. everything that looks fresh and new looks.... familiar. normal. so what if you're a ship? there must be ships like this out there. it's not that weird.]
